The Question: Is there an association between childhood
exposure to radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) and
childhood cancers?
The Study: All the children in Switzerland under 16 years old on
December 5, 2000 were enrolled in this study. They were followed for
eight years and their incidence of cancer was recorded. Each child’s
exposure to RF-EMF from broadcast towers was statistically calculated.
The Results: No significant relationship was seen between RF-EMF
exposure and childhood cancers. Specifically, there was no increased
risk of leukemia or central nervous system tumors.
Comment: There has been a lot of speculation about the risks of
RF-EMF and cancer risk. Most studies find no relationship. This Swiss
study supports the safety of living near broadcast towers.
